Black Book of Secrets & Bone Magician

black

Librarians get recommendations from books from all sorts of places- the newspaper, magazines, catalogs, emails from book companies. However, the absolute best recommendations for me are from my students. Last week a former student Jenny stopped by to visit. Jenny and I have had lots of fun conversations about books in past years, so when she stopped by to visit me my first question after  the polite- “how are you, how is school,”etc, etc, was “What have you been reading?”   Her answers had me heading for the store to buy The Black Book of Secrets and The Bone Magician by F.E. Higgins.

F.E. Higgins is a British writer, who has an extraordinary talent for word choice. Even though this is a 21st century book, opening page one is like stepping into 19th century England.Every word, every phrase removes you from the chair you are sitting in, to the grim and macabre world of Ludlow Fitch and the pawnbroker Zoe Zabbidou who buys people’s inner most secrets and has Ludlow record them in his special black book.  I’m really at quite a loss for words as how to describe these books. I wish I had her talent for storytelling. What I can tell you is that once I opened each book, I couldn’t put them down.  If you are looking for a series that will take you on an extraordinary journey, start with the Black Book of Secrets. (ages grade 5+) Even better, see what F.E. Higgins has to say for herself! Keep Reading, Mrs. Hembree

Visiting Forks and all things Twilight

I had the chance to visit Forks, Washington this past weekend,  home of Bella and Edward and all things Twilight. Forks is a very small town located on the far west side of Washington between the Olympic Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Once known for their logging industry, Forks is now famous as the setting of the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer. We had fun visiting Bella’s truck from the movie, having a Bella Burger at Sully’s Restaurant and having our photos taken between cardboard cut-outs of Bella and Jacob. We also witnessed the incredible amounts of rain that pours down on Forks each year. Last year, in 2009, Forks recorded over 101 inches of rain. That’s over 8 feet of rain!  It’s also why everything is lush green and beautiful! We also visited La Push (Jacob’s hometown in the series) and walked in the Quinalt Rainforest. This temperate rainforest is home to the World’s Largest Spruce Tree! We walked and we looked, but we never saw any werewolves or vampires! I do have a new Twilight in Forks pencil, a Jacob bookmark and Edward bookmark, and some AntiVampire Dust in a very nice blood red bottle! I am prepared for everything now!

Fun Friday before Halloween

It sure was a fun day at school and in the library today. Nothing like the Friday before Halloween to put everyone in good spirits! Ha! Ha! Mrs. Hembree unfortunately was sick and her substitute Miz Daisie Mae covered for her. The Mad Hatter stopped by for a few minutes and Mr. Anderson’s Angels worked their magic in the office.  The kindergarten students had a special visit from Miz Mae who read, or really sang, The 13 Nights of Halloween. Ask your kindergarten student what the goblin got on the 5th night of Halloween! I think you will be surprised! Happy Halloween everyone!

Mrs. Hembree, oops, I mean Miz Daisie Mae

Hunger Games Student Review by Kwesi

hungerHunger Games by Suzanne Collins

This book is a thrilling, excellent page turner. The story is about 12 poor districts that bow down to the capital.

The main characters in the story are Prim, Katniss her older sister, and their mother. You have to be 12-18 years old to be qualified to be in the Hunger Games.  Prim just turned 12 so her chance of being chosen is 1 out of 1,000,000. On the other hand Katniss loves her family and is an excellent hunter with a bow and arrow; well qualified for the hunger games. Out of nowhere Prim gets drawn to be in the Hunger Games. Every time a tribute is drawn a person from the district is allowed to volunteer to take someone’s place but every time it’s the same reply, “No”.  But in this scenario Katniss take her sister’s place for the girl tribute for the hunger games. The other boy tribute for district 12 was Peeta Malark, a boy she owed big favor to. It was when she went hunting and could not get anything and was about to starve to death. She saw the boy walk into his house while getting beaten by his mother for burned bread.   He tossed her the nice perfect bread with just a little burn on the side.

A reason I like this book is because the author is the best at writing action and depression in a good mix. Another reason I like this book is because it’s written by one of my favorite authors, Suzanne Collins.  If you’re a Hunger Games fan and want to meet the author of this book, she is coming to the Barnes and Noble book store in Lynnwood on November 5th at 7pm.

Winter by Taylor

I am winter

I feel the cold winter breeze hit my face

I see the soft white snow

I hear the sound of the hot fire in the fireplace

I touch the cold wrapping paper on my Christmas presents

I smell the delicious cinnamon rolls in the hot oven

I am winter

Let’s Blog it Up!

Let’s start blogging! I know it might be hard to know what to say or what to ask. It’s might also be kind of weird or uncomfortable writing a book review.  A lot of things seem that way when you first get started. It’s like when you first learned how to ride a bike. Nobody does it perfectly the first couple times. It takes practice.

Well, you can start here with a comment about a book you like. It will be like getting your feet wet before you really jump into to full-scale blogging. Watch out! It’s fun and addicting!  Remember too, that regularly submitting thoughtful comments or writing book reviews is one way to exceed your effort in class and earn a 4 in library.

Today’s question is: What book did you recently read that you liked?  It doesn’t have to be the BEST book you ever read. That’s a pretty hard question for a lot of people to answer. I don’t know if I could answer that one. I can’t limit myself to just one book. I can recommend a book I recently read, enjoyed, and think others might enjoy as well.

How do you do this? Click on the comment or no comment words at the bottom of this post. Fill in the required boxes and then write your comment in the bottom box. Give us the name of the book, author if you know it and a little bit about the book. What kind of book is it and why did you like it? I will include a sample comment about a book I recently read.

I just finished reading Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. It was the final book in the Hunger Games science fiction trilogy.  This was one of the best series I have read in years. I don’t generally pick up science fiction for pleasure reading, I am more of a mystery reader. However, when I received Hunger Games as a donation to our library, I got hooked. I could not put this book down. As soon as I finished Hunger Games, I was driving to the bookstore to get Catching Fire. What’s cool about this book? It’s exciting, it’s different, it’s completely unpredictable, it’s scary, and it has fabulous characters. Reading these 3 books is like jumping on the wildest rollercoaster ride you have ever been on. This book will draw you in and not let go. Mrs. Higgins is reading it to her 6th grade class and they love it. Adults love it. Try it out, I doubt you will be disappointed.

So, that is an example of a comment. Yes, it’s a bit long, and you don’t have to write your comment that long if you don’t want to. This isn’t just limited to intermediate students either. Younger children can write about a good picture book they have read.  I don’t care about the length, just the information you have to share. So tell us! We can’t wait to hear about your recommendations!

Battle of the Books Teams Forming

Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading program that students in grades 4-6 can join. Forming teams of 4 or less, students must read the 12 designated novels for the Battle year. Then in January, the teams begin to battle it out until we reach one school Battle winner!  That winning team moves on to battle against other teams within the district. These battles occur online using Instant Messenger in February. Eventually one team is crowned the district Battle winner.

For people not familiar with the program, a Battle is where each team is asked a series of questions about any of the 12 required books. If the team can identify the correct title of the book which answers the question, they earn 2 points. The team with the most points earned after a 10 question battle, wins!

Battle of the Books is a fun way to get connected with other students in the school. It doesn’t cost any money and it’s easy to join. Just come to the library, ask for the pink Battle form, fill it out, turn it in and start reading. Students can have any combination of team members, whether they are boy and girl teams, combination grade level team (4th and 5th graders for example), or even family member teams. We have had brother sister teams in the past! The only rule is there is a maximum of 4 people per team.

We have 2 copies of each battle book this year. They are checked out first come, first served. I don’t do reserves, and you can’t renew a book. Once you are on a team, stop by my desk and check out a book. I often get asked how many of the books should you read. My standard is always, “All of them!” However, that can happen in a variety of ways. Some teams have everyone read every book. Others divide the titles up and have different members read certain books. Whatever way you choose to read the books is up to your team. You do need to know that the more members of a team who have read all the books equals the more people who might remember the one detail you need to answer a question!

All of the books are in the King County Library System, will be at our Scholastic Book Fair in October during the student/teacher/parent conferences and can be found easily at any book store.

All students in grades 4-6 will hear more about the program during their library class in the next 2 weeks. Have fun reading! Mrs. Hembree
