Greetings from Prague!

Hello from Prague in the Czech Republic! Did you know that the people in Prague call their city Praha? It’s a very old and beautiful city.

Mr. Hembree and I arrived yesterday. We left Seattle on Thanksgiving Day at 1:30 pm and we landed in Prague on Friday at 1:30 pm! While that seems like we traveled for 24 hours, it was really 15 hours. Prague is 9 hours ahead of Seattle in time. We missed an entire evening of sleep and we were a little tired yesterday!

Today it was a sunny, beautiful, but chilly day. Because the weather was really nice,we stayed outside most of the day, walking around the Old Town, across the Charles Bridge and Petrin Hill. See saw the John Lennon wall and another place with hundreds of locks. We also watched the time change on the astronomical clock three times! I found an elementary school on our walk and of course wanted a photo of it. The last photo is beef goulash with bread dumplings. It was delicious!

Have a great day! Mrs. Hembree

Here are some photos of our day!

  1. Hi Mrs Hembree

I’m planning on going to Prague next year so I’ll be reading your posts with great interest! You and Mr Hembree have been very busy exploring and I love your photos. Are you going to visit the town of Cesky Krumlov while you’re there?

    Have fun…

    Miss Y 🙂

    • Hello Miss Y,

What a lovely city Prague is! I have one piece of advice, bring very, very sturdy shoes! The roads are primarily all cobblestones, and they are difficult to walk on hour after hour! I am glad I brought good shoes!
No, we are staying in Prague only. There is so much to see here and we are taking our time!

      From,
      Mrs. Hembree

  2. Dear Mrs Hembree,

Wow what a beautiful place Prague is. I just loved reading all about the wonderful time you and Mr Hembree are having.

Just loved the photos as I really feel that I am right seeing there with you. Prague is a place with such history and culture. My dad has traveled to Prague and just loved it. He specially loved the food.

Enjoy your huge adventure Mrs Hembree.

  4. Dear Mrs Hembree,
What a fascinating post with lots of different pictures. Prague sounds like an artistic place to visit. The food looks scrumptious especially the meal with the Beef goulash with bread dumplings. I have not tried dumplings but I must try some one day. I just loved the second photo it was so cool I loved how there was a love heart and some words it really made it stand out. I really hope to see more photos. It looks very cold there.

    From,

    BB.

    • Dear BB,

The food here is so delicious! I had roast duck and dumplings tonight. Last night Mr. Hembree and I shared an apple strudel with vanilla ice-cream. Yummy!

The photo with the heart is on the John Lennon wall. Have you ever heard of the British band The Beatles? It was popular in the 1960’s. John Lennon believed strongly in peace and free speech. After he died, some people turned this wall into the ‘Lennon Wall’. It has graffiti messages all over it, but the words all celebrate peace, love and harmony.

      Mrs. Hembree

  5. Hello Mrs. Hembree,
We are wondering if it can snow this time of year?
What is the population of Prague?? Who gave you the award? What is your favorite landmark so far?
It is very cold here. The high today will be in the 40’s.
The kids all look stuffed with turkey.
Mrs. Dennie and Mrs. Higgins’s class.

    • Dear Mrs. Higgin’s Class,

Yes, it can snow here, but I think more in the winter time.It has been really reasonable – in the 40’s. I wear a scarf to keep out the wind. Plus we are walking all day. I need the scarf in the morning, but have no place to put it once the afternoon comes!

Tomorrow I meet all the other teachers at this Microsoft event. I’ll post pictures when I have a chance!
It’s hard to pick two landmarks. Everyday there is something that I absolutely love. Yesterday it was Golden Lane in the Prague Castle grounds. All the houses on this lane are teeny. Really, really teeny. One room and barely room to turn around inside. They housed the castle guards and other people from the 16th-20th century.

  6. Hello Mrs. Hembree,
Is your day going well? We hope you are having a nice time in Prague.
Are you having fun? What is it like in Prague?
It is cool you got to go on the trip. We are having fun at school. Do you miss us?
We miss you so much, we want to hug you!
We like Mrs. Dennie, that you gave us.
    Sincerely, Mrs. K-D

  7. Dear Mrs. Hembree,
We hope you have a good time in Prague. The beef goulash looks good! The buildings look like a castle. We like the picture of the elementary school.
It’s freezing outside here today. We are writing stuff to you during library class.
We/ hope you win the contest. We hope you like the food.
We can’t wait until you get back.
    Good bye for now,
    Mrs. Olsen’s 1st grade class

    • Dear Mrs. Olsen’s Class,

Today we went inside the Tyn Church and it was as beautiful inside as it is outside. At night this church looks like a fairy tale castle with the lights showing off the spires at the top.

I’m sorry it’s cold there. It has not been too cold here. You have to wear a coat, but it isn’t freezing.

I love the food! I have had goulash, pizza, ham, gnocchi, dumplings, apple strudel, but not all at the same time!

Tomorrow I meet the other teachers here and I start my teacher contest.

      Mrs. Hembree

  8. Dear Mrs. Hembree,
We hope you are having fun. We are curious about the picture on the top right corner. It looks like a market. What is it?
Is the photo in the bottom middle some kind of sun dial?
    We all miss you.
    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Staples 3rd grade.

    • Dear Mrs. Stples’ Class,

Yes, I am having fun and seeing so many things here. You have some great questions!

The photo that looks like a market, is a small street market in the Jewish Quarter of Prague. At the end of the street, you can see a beige building on the left. That is the Ceremonial Hall and at the very end is the Klausen Synagogue.

The Ceremonial Hall was closed when we were there, but the Synagogue was open and has an exhibition of Jewish customs and traditions.

The sun dial looking photo is really a clock! It’s called the Astronomical Clock. It was built in 1490 by a master clockmaker. It tells the time, marks the phases of the moon and sun and all kinds of other significant events. It’s amazing!

Ask Julia or Ola – they saw it last summer and know about it too!

  9. Dear Mrs. Hembree,
We miss you. We hope you have a good trip. Ela just came back from visitng Poland. It is close to where you are.
    What is Prague like?
    The food looks yummy./
    We love you,
    Mr. Fornia’s Kindergarten

    • Dear Mr. Fornia’s Class,

I miss you too! Are you doing any Piggie and Elephant dances?

lea just came back from Poland and that country is near the Czech Republic! Prague is a city with many beautiful buildings! They have cobblestones everywhere. They are those brick-like stones on the streets. You might have seen them before on streets in Seattle near Pike Place Market.

The food is delicious! Tonight I ate bread dumplings. Have any of you ever had them before?

      Keep Reading and Dancing!
      Mrs. Hembree
