It’s a Monster! Agh!!!

It’s mid-October.  The leaves are turning. The days are getting shorter and the nights colder. Are you looking for a new book? Check out what Angela drew for the library yesterday!

Maybe you are thinking that it’s getting close to Halloween and you want a spooky book to thrill your reading time!

Spooky stories are always popular with some students (not me – I get nightmares). This past weekend when I was in Yakima at Washington librarian conference I had the opportunity to listen to the author Royce Buckingham talk about his love of scary books and movies!

Royce shared how the movie Jaws was particularly scary when he was a kid! I remember seeing it too and I didn’t swim in the ocean for a month afterward! However, he loves scary monsters and books like that, which is why he now is both an attorney and a writer of spooky stories.

Do you remember seeing the photos from when Hitu visited the Jaws set last summer and did a little reading in Jaws! This is the movie Royce is talking about! Yikes! That is a scary photo!

If you love this kind of book come in soon and check out the new books by Royce Buckingham.

You don’t have to like monsters to like all the new books in the library! Look at this selection available!  From graphics to humor to fantasy or mystery we have something new for you!

Visiting Yakima was a lot of fun! I had a chance to talk with lots of other librarians and share ideas with them. If you are a teacher librarian looking for a link to my slides, here you go!

  1. Dear Mrs Hembree
We like spooky stories in our class! I wonder if you have ever read Groosham Grange by English author Anthony Horowitz? It’s VERY scary and huge fun!
We have recently been working with an author called Tom Palmer, a children’s author who some of us had the good fortune to meet earlier this term. We read a spooky story of his called The Character Strikes Back – we read one chapter every day for a week, and we LOVED it! If you are interested I will send you a link for the story. Part of it is set in the town we live in!
How lovely to meet up with other librarians to share experiences and no doubt talk books, books, books! Sounds fabulous!
    Regards

    • Dear Mrs. Monaghan,

Do we know Anthony Horowitz???? YES!!! We are huge fans of the Alex Rider series and yes, we also have Groosham Grange! I get too scared to read most spooky books. Just not my genre. Having bad dreams and staying awake at night doesn’t work for me.

However, I love the Alex Rider books! They remind me of Ian Fleming’s 007 James Bond books. They are the 21st century updated version! Lots of crazy action and adventure.

I will check out the link you sent. How incredible that they story is set in the town you live in.

I had fun talking books and presenting at the conference. Sharing ideas and learning from others is awesome.

      Mrs. Hembree

  2. I love Alex Rider too, but my top favourite Horowitz novels are his skits on famous films – The French Confection, I Know What you Did Last Wednesday, The Blurred Man – supposedly for kids but amazing for adults too. It’s great to find a fellow fan!

  3. Hi Mrs Hembree

We like spooky stories in our library too! I’m like you though and don’t read too many spooky stories, especially before I go to sleep!

Last year I shared two spooky picture books with our students. We really liked “Sounds Spooky” and all the sets for the illustrations that the illustrator Sarah Davies made. Follow the link in the post to the website as well.

We also like Alex Rider and The Power of Five series by Anthony Horowitz.

I can see in your New Books display that you have the latest Captain Underpants adventure. There were some very excited fans when our copies went out in our New Books…

    Happy reading!

    Miss Y 🙂

  4. Dear Mrs Hembree,
Spooky Post. I find the series Goosebumps very spooky. I used to read them in bed but now I don’t.

Your new library books look really interesting the book that interested me the most was the one called Tracing Stars. I have not watched the movie Jaws when I was little I wanted to stay up late and watch Jaws.

My dad says I will never ever going Swimming for a month if I watch Jaws and I think I agree with him.

I do not like Spooky books.

I have not seen Jaws at Universal Studios I would like to.

    From,

    BB.

    • Dear BB,

Listen to your DAD! He is right! If you watch Jaws, you won’t want to even visit the ocean, let alone swim in it! I was so scared when I saw that movie. Yes, it’s one of the original scary movies from the 1970’s, so it’s older. However, it is still scary!

I get scared or have bad dreams, so I stay away from spooky stories or movies. I don’t like visiting places that try to scare you at Halloween either. The “Nightmare at Beaver Lake” is near my house and it’s so scary. It’s not a haunted house, it’s a haunted walk through the dark forest at night. I went last year for the first time during family hour. Family hour is when the actors can’t be really scary because of little kids! I was still scared.

Now I am thinking of what book character I want to dress up as for Halloween. There are lots of pirate books and I have a pirate costume. I have seen many ideas on Pinterest. Mostly, I want to dress up as Captain Underpants! What do you think of that idea? 🙂

      From your silly librarian,
      Mrs. Hembree

  5. Dear Mrs Hembree,

I am with you I don’t like scary books or movies. I also went to watch the movie JAWS and I am pretty sure it did scare me for life. It was way back early High School days I decided to sit right in front of the screen. I am pretty sure when JAWS jumped out of the water I jumped right out of my seat too.

I enjoy reading feel good books.

You have got a wonderful selection of new books for the students to read.

Had a huge laugh Mrs Hembree about Captain Underpants.
I think it was an awesome choice Mrs Hembree! 🙂

From you pal down in Australia,

    AA 🙂

    • Dear AA,

I also sat up front to see Jaws. That was NOT a good thing! It was fun to visit Universal Studios and see the Jaws movie set.

They do amazing things in the movies!

I’m glad I made you laugh with my costume idea! I think the kids will like it. The new book is just now published and is so popular!

I’ll send pictures so you can laugh some more!

      Silly in Seattle!
      Mrs. Hembree

  6. Dear Mrs Hembree,
Thank you for replying back to me.

I sure will listen to my dad about the Scary Movie Jaws.
Maybe when I get a bit older I might watch it. How old were you when you watched Jaws? I also do have bad dreams sometimes I get that scared I go under the covers.

There are no scary places in Australia.

I would dislike to go to Nightmare at Beaver Lake. Are there Beavers at Nightmare Beaver Lake? Family hour sounds like a nice day.

At least the Actors have a break from being scary.

You should dress as Alice Miranda.

    From your pal,

    BB.

    • Dear BB,

I like your suggestion of dressing as Alice Miranda! I think I could try to sound very posh and elegant like her. Hum….what should my name be? I feel like I would have to change it and add lots of extra names and hyphens!

The thing is….I already bought my clothes I need to Captain Underpants. I think I will stay with CU for Halloween and dress as Alice Miranda at our Book Character Dress Up Day in March!

As to your question, I was in high school when I saw Jaws! It’s also set off the coast of Massachusetts where I am from, so that made it double-scary! I know tha ocean and know there are sightings of Great Whites there.

I think one of the creepiest stories I ever read was actually a short story by Edgar Allen Poe. It was written in the mid 1800’s and is called The Tell-Tale Heart. Ask your parents about it. They will know this one!

      From the silly librarian,
      Mrs. Hembree
