Kid Lit Movie Project Wins!

Hey upcoming 5th graders! Your book trailer project won second place!

I hope you know how proud I am of all your hard work!

Since Monday evening, I have been at the Partners in Learning US Forum with 100 other educators from around the country. We have been showcasing the projects our students have done using technology. Mrs. Lustgarden and I talked a lot about what the poster should look like and then she put it together.

Everyone had a display booth to set up. Then on Tuesday we had three separate judging sessions. I had three judges come to ask me more in depth questions about our project. It was a lot like taking a test and believe me, I was pretty nervous!

On Wednesday, we learned about Windows 8, and took some classes to learn about some different tools we can use in our classrooms.

In the evening, we went to the Bell Harbor in Seattle for a reception and awards dinner. The weather was perfect and it was fun seeing all the teachers dressed up really fancy!

Before I knew it dinner was over and it was time for the anouncement of the awards. We had found out earlier in the day that the teachers who won would be traveling to Prague in the Czech Republic in late November to compete against teachers from around the world.

The first name that was announced was mine! I was so surprised and excited that I couldn’t even find the steps up to the podium. Our project won second place in Collaboration! I had my picture taken and sat back down at my table.

Eric Willams, a school superintendent in Virginia was one of my judges. Photo courtesy of Vicki A. Davis.

What I didn’t realize until I sat down was that I would be going to Prague! My friend leaned over and said, “You’re going to Prague!” I told her, “No I’m not, we got second place!” At that point she explained that the first and second place winners both go to the Global Forum. And then….I started crying! I couldn’t believe it and really, still can’t.

I can’t wait to see everyone when school starts so we can celebrate together! Let’s get really crazy and break the no popcorn in the library rule. Maybe we will have cake, I don’t know! We will figure out something fun to do!

In the meantime, enjoy your summer and Keep Reading! Jake and Makenzie sent in this photo of them reading at Independence Hall when they were on vacation.

What are you going to send me? We still have some great August weeks to read!

Thank you so much for your supportive comments! I am beyond excited about the chance to represent our school at the global forum.

Our students worked so hard, and really this project is all about them! It’s also something YOU could do in your classrooms!

Thank you so much for the positive wishes! I’m excited for the fall because Josa will be a 4th grader and I know we will be making more trailers, plus some other ideas I have up my sleeve!

Good times are coming at school!

  4. Dear Mrs Hembree,

A huge congratulations to you Mrs Hembree and your wonderful students.

I have just arrived home from been away since Wednesday and arrived home to read this wonderful post.

Like Mrs Yollis I have happy tears for you all and sad tears because I am feeling rather sore from the bike ed camp.
You are all going to have a truly wonderful journey and I will be following you all with such excitement.

    From your pal down under,
    AA 🙂

    • Dear AA,

Thank you for the awesome happy comments! As I have said before, I am so excited and have shed some tears myself!:)

So you went to bike ed camp? Was this with BB? I must say that there is nothing quite like being sore from riding a bike. It’s a bit like being sore from horseback riding, but worse! I mean, who decided those seats have to be so small and so hard?

      I hope you recover quickly!
      Mrs. Hembree

  5. Mrs. Hembree,
Congratulations!!! How exciting this is for you and your students!

After taking your class this spring, I have been working on my blog and plan to take the plunge and “go public” next week. Your work is so inspirational! I love to see all the different ways that various educators use their blogs to interact with students and showcase their work.

Thanks for being a teacher of teachers, as well as children! We appreciate your efforts as you pioneer the way in LWSD :>)

    Sarah Jensen

    • Dear Mrs. Jensen,

I am SO excited to hear that you are going to go live next week with your blog! It’s a fun way to interact with your students. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Please remember you don’t have to take giant leaps in blogging. Take steps that make you comfortable. Nobody is waiting to evaluate how you blog. Find the path that feels right for you and you will stick with it!

Thank you for the compliments! I’m really proud of the work my kids did and am so proud it’s been recognized!

I look forward to learning from you this school year!

      Mrs. Hembree

  6. Dear Mrs Hembree,
Congratulations on coming second that is an awesome achievement.

I am so happy for you that your your students.

I just love the photos they look awesome. Interesting questions.

My favourite technology tool is the widgets because they can move and makes your blog stand out more.

I have been on 2 trips far away from home. The first trip was when I was four and I went to QLD (Queensland). In August I am going to Queensland again for a wedding/holiday.

The second trip was NSW (New South Wales). At New South Wales we go on a holiday for 3 days. At New South Wales we go with the family. Every year my family and I go to New South Wales we actually drive there which takes 6 hours.

Here are 5 top things you should bring.

    1. Tooth paste and a Tooth brush.

    2. A comb.

    3. A Book.

    4. Pete the Cat.

    5. Also A picture of Reese.

    From your pal,

    BB.

    • Hello BB,

I am laughing as I read your comment! You think Pete the Cat should take the trip with me too? I hope he is good!

Your recommendations are good ones. I ca’t go anywhere without my special favorite brand of toothpaste. It takes different in other countries and I don’t read Czech, so trying to find toothpaste in the stores there could be a challenge.

I always travel with a book, often in different forms now – on my tablet, phone and in paperbook form! I don’t know a librarian who doesn’t have a book with them at all time for the “just in case moments”!

What do you do to stay busy on the long car trips? Do you have a mini-movie, or a game player or something? I’m going on vacation tomorrow and on our car trip we are going to listen to music. I can’t read in the car or I get sick to my stomach! We are going to drive along the northern California coast and see the Pacific Ocean! I can’t wait!

      Your Seattle friend,
      Mrs. Hembree

  7. @ Mrs Hembree,

Thanks for your reply. Yes I went with BB on this camp with two groups of grade four children. Have to say I really did enjoy myself and the best bit of all was when we all got to go and visit a lolly show. Most of us did buy up big.

We didn’t just do bike riding we climb mountains and when I say mountains I mean huge hills. Now I know how those hikes feel when they get to the top. I felt like one of them jumping all about the place.

Am feeling already better as it is a lovely day here right now.

    From your pal,
    AA

  8. Dear Mrs.Hembree,
How are you doing? Good job. If you are wondering how is the trip it’s good but hot because in Vietnam it can be 92 degrees. I am commenting on an iPhone.
    From Alex.
P.s. Tell bb I said hi.

    • Dear Alex,

How awesome that you are commenting from your phone in Vietnam! Awards to you for visiting!

I was wondering how your trip was coming along! Wow-that’s some hot weather in Vietnam! It’s warm here too, but not quite like that for sure.

What has been the best part of your visit there? Have you had lots of delicious food?

I have been on vacation too! I went to San Francisco with my husband. We drove there and had lots of fun seeing all the sights on the way there and back! I will do a post about it soon!

      See you soon!
      Mrs. Hembree

P.S. – I will let BB know you said hello!

  9. Dear Mrs.Hembree,
I had good food from restaurants and home. Best part was when I played with Tracy and my old friend. We played bumper cars , cafes , shopping from japan and went to fun places. I have ride 3 roller coasters and had a good time.
    From Alex.

    • Dear Alex,

Oh it really sounds like you are having a great time! Seeing friends makes it even better!

Did you know that we have something in common? I love roller coaster rides too! The faster and crazier- the better I like them!

      Safe Travels,
      Mrs. Hembree
