Thank You For Your Service

Today is Veteran’s Day.

This national holiday is a day honoring all Veterans of the armed services. A veteran is a person who has served in the armed forces: Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or the Air Force either in peace time or during war.

In past years our students have honored Veterans at our school in assemblies, but this year we don’t have a gym where we can all gather.  Instead, students are writing letters to Veterans, making posters and finding personal ways to thank our Veterans who have chosen to serve their country. Many of the 4th graders donated goodies to send overseas as a care package! One class of first graders even learned the Pledge of Allegiance in American Sign Language!

To all our American Veterans, we say, Thank you!”

  1. Dear Mrs.Hemmbre,
This was a great idea to make this post. I have one question. Did you tell BB to make the happy birthday post? If you did cool. I made a comment on Ms.Valenta blog and I gave her the web site to visit. Your buddy Alex.

    • Dear Alex,
I’m glad you liked the post about Veteran’s Day. Thank you!
I didn’t tell BB anything! She decided to make that post all by herself! They just let me know ahead of time that I might see it for you!
I hope you enjoy your day off!
      From,
      Mrs. Hembree

  2. Dear Mrs Hembree,

What a moving post in so many ways. Here in Australia we too on the 11th of the 11th at 11 am stand for one minute where ever we are and remember all those wonderful soldiers men and women who gave so much so that we can have what we have.

We don’t have a holiday. I really loved that your students sent messages, letters and even gifts to these wonderful people in so we can live a war free world.

Thank you so much for this very moving post Mrs Hembree.
    From your friend down under,
    AA.

  4. Dear Bulldog Readers,

Hi my name is Keira I am in 2KJ and I am 8 years old.

At our school we do not have the day off school but we have 1 miunt silence.

Do you have poppy’s were you live?

I really love that stature did you get that picture off flickrCC?

    Best wishes love from,
Keira in 2KJ, in Victoria Austraila.

I really love the video and the pictures.

At home do you have silence at home at a sertent time?

    • Dear Keira,
Thank you so much for visiting our blog here in Washington! It’s a long way from your classroom in Australia, but with blogs, it’s seems so close!
To answer your questions, poppies don’t grow very well in our part of the state because it’s a cooler and wetter area of Washington. Poppies like to grow where it’s hot and a lot sunnier. You can see them all over in California. I tried growing them in my flower garden this year and they di okay. Hopefully next summer they will come back and bloom again.
The Statue of Liberty poster is the official poster of Veteran’s Day for 2011. I got it from the Department of Veteran’s Affairs in Washington, DC, our country’s capital city. It gets confusing to have Washington state and Washington, DC.
I do get many of my photos from Flickr CC. I also take a lot of my own, so I don’t have to worry about copyright violations!
I thought about veteran’s I know all day on 11/11/11. I have many family members who have been or are now serving in the military. I sent them emails and messages about how I appreciate their service to our country.
      From,
      Mrs. Hembree

  5. Dear mrs.Hembree,

what do you do for veterans day each year? Each year I put up flags on my front door and we have a moment of silence for 1 minute.

    sincerely, Jacob

    • Dear Jacob,
For Veteran’s Day I call all of the veterans in my family and wish them a Happy Veteran’s Day. I also sent my step-son, who is in the Air Force a special package with letters from students.
I think the idea of having a moment of silence is great. I used to put up a flag, but I don’t have one anymore. I need to get a new one.

      Mrs. Hembree

  7. This is a great blog Mrs.Hembree. When the Veterans actually see this, i think they would be so touch and proud of their hard work. Yesterday, i send an e-mail to my cousin who is in the U.S Army Rangers, he says that lots of Veterans who is his friends has been to your blog and they appreciate your blog a lot. They promise us that they will do their greatest to serve our country and protect us from any danger. I’am glad you create this blog.
