Happy Birthday George & Abe! It’s President’s Day!

Today is President’s Day, a national holiday in the US. Originally, President’s Day began as a way to celebrate our first president ,George Washington’s birthday on February 22nd. After his death, it became a holiday to remember his life and his contribution to our history.

After president Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, We also added another national holiday, on February 12th to celebrate his birthday. In 1971, President Nixon combined both holidays into one as President’s Day, the 3rd Monday in February and a holiday to remember all of our past presidents.

hatA fun book to read for President’s Day is Abe Lincoln’s Hat by Martha Brenner. Before he became our President, Lincoln was a lawyer. He didn’t have a lot of money, but he always wanted to look his best so he bought a long black coat and a black top hat to wear. People always remembered him because of his good deeds and his famous black coat and hat!

He also had a small problem- he often forgot papers, something you can’t do when you are a lawyer. He came up with a great idea! He would put his papers in his hat and then he would have everything he needed.

Recently the first graders read this book and wrote about what they would put in a tall hat if they wore one.

Lollypops and money – Danny

A pillow because when you go on vacation you can rest – Sebastian

I will put my cat in the hat- JoJo

Game Boy and a hot dog – Alison

I would have an apple in my hat because I could eat it every now and then. I would use a coil of rope for emergencies. – Keiji

Hersey’s kisses and Cheetoes – Morgan

A teddy bear and a picture of me when I was a baby – Camille

A smoothy because I get thirsty and hungry and a laptop because I get bored a lot  and I like a lot of websites like Mo Willems.- Sasha

A Teddy Bear because I can feel fuzzy, fuzzy, fuzzy! –  Kailer

A calculator so that I can do my math- Milica
