Some Down Under Book Love

Look what came in the mail from Australia!

That’s right, two books and a wonderful note from Miss Y in Melbourne, Australia. She is a librarian at the St. Martin of Tours Primary School. We have been blogging buddies for over a year now, exchanging ideas for books back and forth.

These Andy Griffiths books are going to be BIG hits in our library. You can’t NOT laugh when you read them. They are just that funny! Look at this photo of him from his website. Does he look like a serious kind of guy? I haven’t had a chance to read the books yet, but here’s what it says on Andy’s website:

“Andy and Terry live in an incredible ever-expanding treehouse and create very silly books together. Andy writes the words and Terry draws the pictures… well, when they’re not too distracted by all the amazing things going in their incredible ever-expanding treehouse! Last year they opened a new school with a brand new library.”

I think these books sound like some crazy fun. If you are in 3-5th grade, this might be the just-right book for you. Stop by the library and put in your reservation. They will be available for check out early next week.

It’s been quite a week for connections. First a phone call from New Zealand and then a package from Australia. I love these reading connections! Miss Y’s students have been enjoying some Mo Willems books we sent her last year and now we have some Andy Griffiths books here! It’s a full circle of reading fun!

Here’s a photo of what the school looks like outside, courtesy of the magic of Google maps! I hope you will visit Miss Y’s LRC blog soon and leave her a comment.  I just watched a new book trailer she made about a new book in the Clementine Rose series for girls by Jacqueline Harvey. This is the author of the Alice Miranda books we already have in our library! Jacqueline visited Miss Y’s school last year. Here is the post about this visit. I sure hope if Jacqueline ever visits the Pacific Northwest on a book tour, she will stop by our library!

  1. Hi Mrs. Hembree and Bulldog readers,

What a great surprise to receive those! It’s amazing just who you can connect with when you’re blogging! I see you’ve made some great friends and they’re clearly very kind for what they’ve sent you!

We’ve been lucky enough to receive some great gifts from overseas as well. It’s always incredible to get a package and look to see it’s been sent by someone outside of the United States!

I hope you enjoy your books. You’ll have to let me know how they are!

    Sincerely,
    Mr. Avery

  2. Dear Mrs Hembree,

This is just wonderful. How wonderful Miss Y is in sending you those wonderful books to add to your wonderful library.

Miss Y is such a very giving person she always amazes me with how giving she is as you are too.

The wonderful power of blogging is so powerful for when you receive gifts like this, to me just proves the power of blogging. For we all want to share, send gifts to show just how much we value our blogging connections around the globe.

Like Mr Avery wrote I too hope you all enjoy reading your new books from Miss Y.

    From your friend,
    AA 🙂

  4. Hi Mrs Hembree and the Bulldog readers,

When I checked my emails today I was so excited to see that our books had arrived safely! What a fabulous blog post Mrs Hembree! You have certainly done your homework on Andy Griffiths and our school. I can’t wait to see what your readers think of Andy’s books.

I wonder if we could create our own “Global Tree House”?

I have done a blog post in reply to yours…

I love that we now have a “full circle of reading fun”!
    Happy reading everyone…

    Miss Y 🙂

  5. Oh what an amazing blog!
I found you because you are friends with Kim Yeomans in Melbourne. I love her work too!
I especially love your Books for Africa project.
I would love to share your work with my students next week….is that ok?
    Marg

    • Dear Marg,

Any friend of Kim is a friend of ours! I would love for you to share what we are doing with your students! It would be fun if they wanted to comment either on this blog or the Books to Africa one. We have a new post about what life is like for kids around the world. We’d love to hear about Australia.

      From,
      Mrs. Hembree

  6. Dear Mrs Hembree,
That was so generous of Miss Y to send you two funny Andy Griffiths books. I have read only one Andy Griffiths books before. But my friends say they are so funny especially the 13 story tree house. I read the Big Bad Book by Andy Griffiths and Terry. In the Big Bad Book lots of bad things happen. I noticed Story was spelled differently.

    From your pal,

    BB.

    • Dear BB,

You found the word that is spelled differently in our countries! Some others are favorite/favourite, color/colour, humor/humour.

I am looking forward to reading this tree house book! Then I will undestand what Miss Y means when she says we can build a global treehouse.

      From,
      Mrs. Hembree

  7. Dear Bulldogs,
I love your blog. It’s cool how you write about stuff like this post. Its amazing. I dont think Ive ever read a book by Andy Grffin.
It looks like you spell the word story storey. It facinates me how that works.
I just got a blog, its called Ari’s Safari.

    From,
    Ari in Mr Avery’s class

    • Dear Ari,
Thank you for visiting our blog. You had a few days off with the snow! Did you do anything fun or were you stuck inside?

Andy Griffiths is an Australian author and has written lots of funny books that boys tend to enjoy. He is not the American actor named Andy Griffith, but their names are very similar!
I will check out your blog!
      From,
      Mrs. Hembree

  8. Dear Mrs. Hembree,

This is the first blog buddy post we have read together as a class. We are interested in reading the books you talked about in this post. The picture you took captured our attention. We are wondering if we have any of the books you mentioned in our library. If we received a package in the mail from Australia or any other school, we would certainly be surprised! We have not heard of the author Andy Griffiths before, however we have heard of the Andy Griffith Show. Have you seen this show?

    Sincerely,
Mrs. Moore and the 6th Grade Techie Kids

    • Dear Mrs. Moore and the Techie Kids,

Thanks for visiting our blog again! I like the posters you are doing in your classes. I forgot about Kerpoof! I’ll have to mention it again and try to do one of your projects. Do you have advice for us before we begin?

The Andy Griffiths books in the post aren’t available here yet, however the 13 Storey Treehouse will be out in April in the US. Andy has written lots of super funny books. If they aren’t available in your school library, they are probably in the local public library. Here is a link to some of the titles: title=”Andy Griffiths Books”>http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=ntt_at_ep_srch?_encoding=UTF8&field-author=Andy%20Griffiths&search-alias=books&sort=relevancerank

Yes, I have seen the Andy Griffith show. I like Ron Howard’s character. Now he is a famous movie director.
      Mrs. Hembree

      • Dear Mrs. Hembree,

Thank you so much for the reply! We will read it together in class on Wednesday. I know our students will be so happy to hear from you!

        From,
        Mrs. Moore 🙂

      • Dear Mrs. Hembree,

Thank you for your reply! We are so excited that someone took the time to respond to us! Our class saw your link and are now very interested in reading some of Andy Griffiths’ books. We thought the titles were very funny! Sharing some of the book covers on the big screen caused us to giggle. They reminded Andrew that he has read some of these books before. Now we are wondering if you were planning to send any of these books to India with your book project. We will watch your upcoming posts to find out.

        Your blog buddies,
        The 6th grade Techie Kids

        • Dear 6th Grade Techie Kids,
I am laughing! I think I know what covers you might have seen! This author has some funny titles and covers. However the covers of his books in the US look much different than the covers in Australia.
We don’t have plans to send those books to Africa or India! They are actually pretty big and we are sending thinner and less heavy books. Then we can get more books in the box!
          Thanks for visiting again!
          Mrs. Hembree

          • Dear Mrs. Hembree,

We wonder if the meaning of those book titles might be strange or confusing to people outside of the United States. Our class thinks that some jokes just might be best kept in certain areas!

That is an excellent strategy you are using! It is wise to send books that are thinner and lighter. Shipping over seas is very expensive! This strategy will allow you to send more books for a smaller cost.

            Keep up the good work!
            The 6th grade Techie Kids
