These are just some of the inventive ways our students chose to read for our 2nd annual summer reading contest!

Every contest needs a winner and judges! Our Australian blogging buddies AA, BB and BB’s cousin Kayla were our judges again this year! Woo-hoo! A big round of claps to these three people who spent a lot of time helping me decide categories and winners.

They also said it’s hard to pick just one winner.
So….I decided everyone who participated won in a specific category. When you read, you are a winner for life!

Dear Mrs Hembree
I love your readers’ competition… I spent a lot of my holiday reading guide books as we travelled to different countries in Europe! This year I bought a Kindle to make travelling and reading easier… but my kids loaded their books onto it and we had to all take it in turns! I like reading everywhere, but my favourite place is in the bath… My goal this year is to read a poem a day to my class!

Dear Mrs. Monaghan,
I love reading on my device too! I listen to one book while I’m on the treadmill and another on CD in the car! Reading is much lighter in weight when you use these fun devices! No more dragging bags of books when on vacation!
I hope you have fun with your poem a day. That’s a great goal! I’m working on my 366 books for this year. I have about 100 books left to go! The pressure is on!
What countries did you go to in Europe? I’m devouring my travel book on Prague because I’m going there in November! I also read a lot of maps in the summer when I went on a car trip with my husband to California.

Firstly I would like to thank you for making me as well as BB and Kayla your prime judges. I can truly say that BB and I as well as Kayla truly loved this competition. I am always amazed with the great photos your wonderful readers send in.
They sure are such a keen bunch of readers and are willing to read any where.
I really enjoy reading in the evenings. I feel that is when I am at my best and more relaxed.

Dear AA,
I hope you will tell Kayla thank you for me. I wasn’t sure of her name and didn’t want to write it incorrectly on the blog. You are the best judges I could have!
Reading relaxes me too! I read at the breakfast time, on the treadmill, in the car (audio book), on the couch, on the lawnchair outside. The best place is in bed! Warm, comfortable reading is perfect!

The craziest place I have ever read was on a bus with my friend Kamarah.
My reading goal is to read a book every week. Thank you for letting me judge this year’s reading competition.

You do such an amazing and thoughtful job with your judging! You make my work so much easier. I hope you will accept an invitation to judge next year too.
I think a book a week is an awesome goal. I am still working on my reading goal for 2012! I have a few months left.
Reading on a bus is crazy! I can’t read on a bus. It makes me motion sick. This summer I read on a huge ferris wheel! That was crazy!

My cousin has told me about the blindsight movie. It sounds like a very sad and interesting movie.

Hi BB,
The movie Blindsight is interesting for sure, but not so sad. I admire the risks these teenagers were willing to take to try to climb Mt Everest. Talk about strong and full of courage! I wonder what they are doing now. I haven’t done any research on it, but I hope the experience has changed their lives.

Yes it is crazy reading on a bus but fun too.

As I mentioned to Mrsl. Krebs, I am working on my reading goal. Sometimes what I put on Goodreads doesn’t come through on my blog. I’m not sure why. Those silly technical issues can be so time consuming.
I watched a fabulous documentary about 6 blind Tibetan teenagers who tried to climb Mt. Everest. It’s called Blindsight. Have you ever seen it?

I love your movie! Thanks for sharing it and letting my hammock picture be in it. (That’s one of my favorite places to read.) I’ve read a lot of books this summer, and I’m managing to keep up reading at a good pace since school started. My goal is to read about 20 more books by the end of December.

Dear Mrs. Krebs,
I absolutely love the hammock photo! It brings back so many fond memories of my childhood in Maine, reading and swinging between the trees.
The perspective you took is so unique! It sounds like you have a great reading goal. I need to read a few more than that to reach my reading goal by December 31st. I read a lot of longer novels this summer, and my pace slowed a bit. Still it’s my goal to reach and I am happy with my progress!

I am sure you will have an amazing time in Prague and of course huge congratulations on your competition success – what a very exciting and rewarding way to earn a foreign trip! And well deserved, too. Prague is a stunning city which I have had the good fortune to visit twice, I am sure you will be bowled over. This summer we were in Berlin, Krakow, Budapest, Vienna, Salzburg, Venice, Lake Garda, Zurich, Brussels and Berlin – we travelled by train and backpacked with our young kids. It was an amazing adventure. Truly exhilarating. Lots of maps too – one of my top favourite things to read – I am a sat-nav denier!!

Right now, both of us are reading Harry Potter. We both really liked the first book. Miriam is reading the second book and doesn’t like as much. Have you read this series? Did you like it?

So, you are reading Harry Potter now? Are you enjoying this series? If so, you have thousands and thousands of people who love these books! They are such a popular series in our library!
I am a bit fearful to admit a teeny, tiny secret. My favorite genre is not fantasy. I have tried and tried and tried to like it, but I don’t get a lot of enjoyment from reading about dragons and magic. So, even though I tried to like Harry Potter, I have not read the entire series. I am not worried too much though because there are lots of kids who love it!
I prefer mysteries, adventure and realistic fiction. Do you have a favorite genre of books?

I love this idea! I am definitely adding this to my idea file for the future when I become a school librarian. I think the kids would love to add their pictures to the blog and see where others are reading. What a creative way to encourage reading. Could you tell me more details about your summer reading program? We do a summer AR program, but for a school of 800, we only have about 20 that do it. I would love to think of something that would get more kids involved. The program also requires them to come to the school several times throughout the summer, but we know that not every kid can do that for any number of reasons. Doing something online could allow kids to do it from anywhere and at anytime. I look forward to hearing more about your summer reading program.

Dear Ms. Gullett,
The summer reading contest is a fun way to keep students reading through the summer. I saw the idea on Mr. Schu’s blog in Illinois and Mrs. Miller’s blog in Iowa. If you haven’t discovered their blogs yet, I highly recommend them. They are both movers and shakers in the library world and you will learn lots from their posts.
I have between 30-40 students participate in the contest. They get to take part at home and their parents send the photos in. I wish more would get involved, but summers are busy time and I understand that. We have about 10% participation at our school. Nobody has to come to the library in the summer for this, including me!
