Reading is All About Fun!

Our latest reading photos clearly show that reading can be fun, no matter where you are!

In the first three photos, our readers are on Lopez Island, which is in the San Juan Islands between Washington and Vancourver Island, British Columbia, Canada. You have to go by boat, ferry or plane to get there.

Gabe is reading to his sister by headlamp on a camping trip on Lopez Island.

Taking a break at the kangeroo farm.

On the beach at Spencer Spit, Lopez Island.

Have you ever seen a magic show? Have you ever tried to create some magic yourself? Check out Jaryn and what he’s learning from his magic book!

Our next reader, Josa visited Oregon where he also did some creative reading. Josa went to some caves in Oregon. Imagine reading deep underneath the earth’s surface!

He also got outside for some fun in the sun! I’ve always wanted to ride in one of these fancy bicycle carriages! They look like a great way to get around!

What do you think about going to the dentist office? Sheadyn knows how to make it funny with a little help from Garfield.

Miriam, one of Mrs. Yollis’ former students in California sent in a group reading photo! I think it’s great that we have blogging buddies helping us with our reading photos! She explains this photo in her own words:

In this picture my siblings and I are all reading our books. I am reading Number the Stars by Lois Lowry which is about two families who are going through World War II. My younger brother Michael is reading the Horrible Harry series by Suzy Kline, which is about a boy who always gets in trouble. My little sister Hannah is reading the Amber Brown series by Paula Danziger. They are twins and are going into first grade and they are already reading chapter books! My sister Sarah is reading The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. It is about a baby boy raised in the graveyard by dead people, and he is trying to find his real family.

A huge thank you to everyone near and far who has sent in photos for our summer reading contest. There is still time, so get out there, have some fun while you are reading and send us your photo!

  1. Dear Mrs Hembree,
Readtastic post I just love the photos.

I had a laugh when I saw Josa on the Bike :D.

I have not heard of Lopaz Island. The Kangaroo farm sounded like so much fun.

Sometimes when I go to town they have a market and you can pat animals. I held a guinea pig once. Once a duck tried to escape but my dad caught him.

Have you been to a petting zoo before?

I liked the picture of Gabe reading a picture story book to his sister.

    From your pal,

    BB.

    • Dear BB,

Isn’t it funny that there is a kangeroo farm in Washington? I haven’t been there, but people I know who have say it’s a fun place to visit!

I think my front yard has turned into a deer farm. Every morning the deer walk into my flower gardens, take some nibbles and move on. On Friday morning there was Mama, two fawns, and Papa deer. Needless to say, most of my flowers are gone. I can’t decide if this upsets me because I love living where I can see wildlife every day.

Yes, I remember going to a petting zoo as a child. I also took my daughter to the petting zoo at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. It’s fun petting the different animals. I don’t really need a petting zoo now though. Reese my dog, insists that we pet him A LOT everyday!

  2. Dear Mrs Hembree,

Wow! once again your wonderful Bulldog Readers have been reading in some awesome places.

I loved all the photos as we would say “they rock”.

I really feel that this year it is going to be very challenging to pick a winner, some how I know you will agree with me Mrs Hembree.

Happy reading everyone and keep the awesome photos rolling in.

    From your friend down under,
    AA 🙂

  3. Dear Mrs. Hembree,

I am loving all the different places that students find to read! Such dedication and imagination! Reading at the dentist…who knew!

How great is it that some kids from my school have joined in the fun! I’ll be sure to share with Miriam and Sarah when I see them on Wednesday.

I love what you are doing with the blog! It’s fabulous!

    • Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Never, in all my dentist appointments, have I ever brought a book with me! I agree that it’s a great idea!

I hope you have a great first week at school. I was at Costco the other day and saw a giant teddy bear and thought of you. Not Panda, but a distant cousin!

Today I am planning some first activities and books to read. Do you have a favorite picture book for your 3rd graders?

      Your friend in Washington,
      Mrs. Hembree
