Are You Reading?

It’s time for summer reading fun!

How about trying an audio book?

Nicholas listened to an audio book during a recent car trip!

Reading manuals count too!

You never know when the Cub Scout Handbook will come in handy!

Seattle’s brand new ferris wheel recently opened on the waterfront. Mr. and Mrs. Hembree went for a ride!

Pete the Cat helped me cope with being 175 feet in the air!

The views of the Seattle waterfront were pretty spectacular!

In the foreground you can see 2 car ferries that transport people home to nearby islands. In the background are our two sports stadiums.

Still you should never be without a book!

So, don’t forget to send in those fun reading photos for our Summer Reading Contest! It doesn’t matter where you are or what you’re doing. There’s always a good time to read!

  2. Mrs. Hembree,

We’re excited about our new ferris wheel, so thank you for the birds-eye-view. We’ve heard the line is long, so when we go, we’ll be sure to bring our books to read while we wait! Blue Cat looks like he’s purring – must be all the seagulls on view.

    • Dear Judy and Josa,
We went to see the ferris wheel on a Monday and it was cloudy, so the line wasn’t too long. I’m afraid of heights and was scared that I would be a nervous wreck. However, to me it was just like going on a chair lift when I am skiing. With the total enclosure, I wasn’t scared at all!
I hope you go sometime! It was fun!
      From,

  3. Hi Ms Hembree

I would love to have your long summer break to be able to read through the never ending pile of books next to my bed!

The views from your new ferris wheel in Seattle are spectacular! Lucky you had Pete the Cat to look after you!

I’m looking forward to seeing the fun reading photos from your students over summer.

Are you relaxing a bit after your exciting time at the ISTE conference?

    Miss Y ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Dear Miss Y,
Thank you for visiting from Melbourne! Is it terribly cold there now? I saw on Twitter that there was a computer education conference in South Australia recently. Did you attend that one?
I have been trying to relax a bit, but seem to stay quite busy. I am getting ready for the US Forum at Microsoft at the end of the month. Plus I was accepted to some presentations in the fall, so I have some presentations to get ready!
I have been trying to get lots of reading done. In the summer I read more adult books – mostly mysteries. I have to get my fix of good mystery stories. I was a Nancy Drew fan as a young girl and never outgrew my love of a good suspenseful mystery.
However, this morning I just finished The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. It is the book of the summer in my town and I picked up a free copy to read. They are trying to get lots of people to read it and then we will all be able to meet the author when he does a visit in September. It’s a great book about a family told through the eyes of the family dog. Being the dog lover I am, I really, really enjoyed it.
What are you reading these days Miss Y?
      Your friend,
      Mrs. Hembree

  4. Dear Mrs Hembree,

Wow I really enjoyed reading this post and I just loved all the photos that show you and your wonderful Bull dog readers where they are reading.

I must say you and Pete are so brave reading so high up in that ferries wheel I really don’t feel I could have done it. Maybe if I did bring a book to read up high I could.

BB is back at school however I have given her my cold so she is feeling rather unwell at this give time. Hopefully once see the sun she may feel a little better.

I really enjoyed reading your review about The Art of Racing in the Rain. Sounds like a great read especially reading it through the eyes of a family dog.

Speaking of dogs I have just sent Mrs Yollis a photo of BB with a huge poddle called Sugar on her blog maybe you may like to check it out. ๐Ÿ™‚

I will try to send you a photo of BB reading somewhere interesting for you Mrs Hembree if you like. Have only just learnt how to download photos onto my computer. Still am a bit silly when it comes to tech and computers, as am trying to learn. BB is a great help too. ๐Ÿ™‚

Now enjoy your holidays with the warm sun shine.

    From your pal down under,
    AA

    • Dear AA,
I’m so pleased you are feeling better. Those colds are so nasty and aren’t they rude to pass around the family too!

I did enjoy The Art of Racing in the Rain. It took me only 1 day because I didn’t do much else! I am looking forward to meeting the author in September. He lives in the Seattle area.

I hope you will send me a photo of BB reading and you too if you have it. BB is quite talented with the computer. I’m sure she can show you how to download the photos and then you will be an expert too!

Now I wonder what book you will be reading!
      Mrs. Hembree

  5. @ Mrs Hembree,

Thank you for your reply back to me. I always love to read your reply. Well done for reading the book in one whole day.

I am reading The One and Only Ivan and I must say it really is an emotional read.
I seem to get very emotional while reading this book. I really love how Katherine as written this novel.

Wish I could write like that now that is talent. BB has picked out another novel for me to read and it is called Chinese Cinderella and the Secret Dragon Society.
BB read this book during the school holidays and did say it was a great read.

It is like the fairy tale story of Cinderella which is based on a true incident that took place in China during the war. How a young girl has to learn how to survive with having no family, friends in a world where even walking the streets is a very dangerous place.

Hope to send you the photo soon Mrs Hembree.

    Happy reading.
    Cheers AA ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Dear Mrs Hembree,
    Awesome book post.

I really liked the photos this time they are really funny and cool.

I have heard of the book Nicholas is listening to it’s really good.

Mr Hembree and you Mrs Hembree also Pete were very brave to go on the new Ferris Wheel I really don’t think I would be brave to go on the Ferris Wheel.

The book I am reading is ALICE MIRANDA IN NEW YORK this is an awesome book I just love reading it.

I have not listened to an audio book but I would like to.

    From your pal,

    BB

    • Dear BB,
It’s so much fun knowing that our readers like our photos too! I’m glad you are enjoying Alice Miranda in New York. What is your favorite part so far?

I thought I would be very scared to go on the Ferris Wheel. I don’t usually like them at fairs and carnivals because they go very slowly and you sit in an open chair where you can look down, down, down!

This Ferris Wheel has cars that are completely enclosed. I actually thought it was fun to look out at the sights. I was feeling pretty brave that day!

      Do you like rollercoaster rides?

      From,
      Mrs. Hembree

  7. Hi Mrs Hembree

I didn’t attend the conference in Adelaide, but I did go to the Slide to Learn conference for mobile learning here in Melbourne on the first two days of my holidays. I discovered lots of fabulous Apps for iPads to engage our students in their learning. Augmented Reality is amazing!! I’m excited because we just got a grant to buy three iPads for the LRC!

Would you believe one of my fellow dog lover colleagues has just lent me her copy of “The Art of Racing in the Rain”! I’m thoroughly enjoying it and can’t wait to hop into bed to read it each night!

You are busy as always Mrs Hembree! What will your presentations be about? (You might do one here in Australia one day…)

    Happy reading!

    Miss Y

    • Dear Miss Y,

Getting three new iPads for your LRC is great news! Your students will have lots of fun learning with them. Our school is strictly a PC school, but I admit that I love my iPad and the things I can do with it. I especially love how portable it is.

How are you liking The Art of Racing in the Rain? It is set here in the Seattle area and I loved reading about all of the places I know wo well.

I have some major work with my presentations! One is on making book trailers. The other is on changing your fiction section to a genre based system. The last is on fun ways to advertise books to kids in your school. I would love your help with that topic. Do you have any fun, creative or unusual ways you let kids know about books in your school? Have you seen any ideas with your Australian colleagues?

      Happy Reading!
      Mrs. Hembree
