Let the Games Begin!

Are you counting the days, hours, minutes until the opening of the Hunger Games movie?

Check out our new display for the most highly anticipated movie since Twilight! This series has been in the top ten among 6th graders for the last two years. Now it’s coming to the big screen!

I have to admit, I usually HATE movies that are made from books. Somehow they never live up to my expectations. However, this time, given the fact that Suzanne Collins worked with the the producers of the time, I am crossing my fingers that THIS film will be awesome!

Of course, it took a little reading to convince myself about whether or not to go to the movie.

Besides the 6th graders who are anticipating the movie, and myself, there are some staff members who I hear have opening day tickets!

Now if you are wondering what all the hype is about, Scholastic has published an interview with Suzanne Collins who explains about the Hunger Game series. If you want more information, please visit the Scholastic Video website here.

  1. Dear Mrs.Hmebree,
I think the book will base on the book The Hunger game. I draw the cover of The One and Only Ivan. I feel great about drawing the cover and can you put me on hold for the book The One and Only Ivan.

  2. Dear Mrs Hembree,

Once again thank you for a great post. I have not heard nor read any of The Hunger game books but sure will be.

I really enjoyed the interview with Suzanne Collins. The movie will be out here soon too. However I won’t be going to the movie as I much rather read the book. Movie most of the times really spoil the book.

Thank you again for another awesome post Mrs Hembree, you really know how to bring your library to Australia.

    From you pal,
    AA

    • Dear AA,
As much as I love the Hunger Games, I also know this book isn’t for everyone. The interesting thing is that teens and adults both love this book. It was written for young adult, but I sure know a lot of the over 21 crowd that love it too. When a book can stretch between both audiences, it’s a sign of a skilled writer.
My fingers are crossed though. Will the movie live up to my expectations? I don’t know.

  4. @ Mrs Hembree,

Thank you for writing back to me. I am curious have you ever seen a movie that you have thought now that was just like to book.

I can only think of one and that was to Kill a Mocking Bird.
As this book is my all time favourite and I always love to re read this book. When I watched the movie many years ago I thought it was very much like the novel I read.

    From your pal,
    AA 🙂

    • Dear AA,
Can you believe it, but I’ve never watched to Kill a Mockingbird all the way through. I need to rent it and watch it soon! the one book that I thought translated well on the big screen was Gone with the Wind. It was my favorite novel as a teenager and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched that movie.

  5. Hi Mrs Hembree
Your post (and my son’s persistent nagging) inspired me to start reading The Hunger Games, especially as there is so much hype around it at the moment! Three chapters in and I am gripped… but the film/book thing is often disappointing! Like AA, I love To Kill a Mockingbird and could read/watch it over and over. I have also really enjoyed the Harry Potter films and books – prefer the books for detail and plot, however the films are fun and follow the story pretty well. And if more people read the books as a result of the film, then I suppose that has to be good too, doesn’t it?

  6. Dear Mrs.Hembree,
I thought the book was way better than the movie because they left out a bunch of parts, but it still is my favorite movie!I have read two of the books and I am not a big fan of death movies or books but Hunger Games is amazing!!!

    • Dear Hannah,
Thanks for visiting our blog! I agree with you. Hunger Games, the book was much better than the movie. Yet, I think they did a pretty good job of keeping to the heart of the book and not changing a bunch of stuff like Hollywood usually does!
It’s one of my favorite books!

I’m so glad you came in the library to ask about The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. We don’t have it, but I did find a link to the short story on the web. You can read The Lottery here:

Thanks for your comment! I’m glad you are having time to read during your vacation. Sometimes the time has to be just right with books. It doesn’t matter if you didn’t like it before, now you do and that’s awesome! Enjoy!

I have been done with Harry Potter for quite a while! It was great! A few weeks ago, I finished Pery Jackson and The Lightning Theif. It was great! Last week I finished Percy Jackson and The Sea of Monsters. I don`t know if they have a third one, but I sure hope they do! Anyways, I love to read!
