Hurray! It’s check out time in kindergarten! Starting this week the kindergarten students will be bringing home a library book to read during the week.
The students will choose a paperback book from the baskets. This book will come home in this clear plastic bag and needs to be returned to the classroom in the same bag. A classroom helper will bring the books back to the library each day.
Books are checked out for a week at a time. The following is the return schedule for each kindergarten class.
Mrs. Flowers – Books due by Wednesday
Mrs. Hynden – Books due by Thursday
Mr. Fornia – Books due by Friday
Kindergarten students will only be able to bring home a paperback book while they are learning how to take care of borrowed library books. This is an important lifeskill and I hope you will encourage your child to take special care of their library book while it is in your home. Any books lost or damaged will either need to be replaced or paid for by the end of the school year.
I hope you and your child will enjoy this new part of our kindergarten library lessons!
Hi–
I never thought of sending a letter home with book check-out. Great idea! Would you be willing to share what is on your letter?
anna.zbacnik at isd623.org
I am new to the library this year–but I am thinking that next year I would like to send home notes with K-1.
Thanks for sharing the photos and ideas.
Hi Anna,
I just sent you an email, so hopefully I had the address correct.
Julie
Dear Mrs Hembree and your new readers,
I really love this concept of the your children getting a library pack with a book for them to read.
When I was a young girl I really wish the school had done something like this for I believe more children would have enjoyed reading at a much younger age.
Do, they receive puppets with their reader packs Mrs Hembree as well.
My favourite book when I was a young child was called Elmer the Elephant. It was a story about an elephant who look different but because she looked different she really was just the same deep down.
Take Care Mrs Hembree from a fan down under,
AA

Dear Mrs Hembree,
Those book bags look awesome Mrs Hembree. Those Kinder kids look like they are having fun picking their books.
I remember last year you did the book bags. Mrs Hembree you do an awesome job making those book bags.
I remember when I was in kinder I read a book called Honey my bunny which is a cute book about a bunny who gets lost but then his Mummy finds him.

Dear BB,
Book bags make it a bit easier for the kindergarten students to keep their books clean, don’t you think? They are very excited about bringing home books. They have been waiting patiently for a few months!
I don’t know Honey my Bunny, but it sounds like a perfect book about love!
I hope you are enjoying 4th grade! What are you learning about?
From,
Mrs. Hembree

Dear Mrs. Hembree,
Congrats on the kindys!
I think it is cool that they can check out a book now!
What kindy class was the first to check out?
From, Rasmus.
Dear Rasmus,
The kindy students are so excited about checking out books and bringing them home! It is a big step to take. The first class was Mrs. Flower’s class because they come on Wednesdays to the library.
Do you remember a favorite book you read in kindergarten?
From,
Mrs. Hembree
Hello Mrs. Hembree,
I am a new school librarian and am loving your book bag idea! I think this is such a great way to help Kindergarteners start their book borrowing off on the right foot. I was wondering if you would be willing to send me the note you send home in the bag with the book?
Thank you for all of your inspiring, creative posts. I am enjoying your posts tremendously!
