Our Leaf Man Connections

Author Lois Ehlert at a book signing.

In kindergarten we have been doing an author study about Lois Ehlert. She writes wonderful stories that I love to read in the fall. After we read the books, we talk about the book-to-book connections we can make between the two books. Kindergarteners are great at making book links! They can tell you that both in both books, Lois Ehlert uses a cut-out technique. They can also tell you that she uses a collage technique in her illustrations.

This time after we read the stories, the kindergarteners got to do something really special in art class with Mrs. Lustgarten!   They made library to art connections by making their own leaf men!

They also learned a new words like called  “frottage”!

Frottage is when you take a piece of paper and a crayon and rub over a textured plate.

Here are their awesome kindergarten Leaf Men!

Have you ever read a Lois Ehlert book?

What do you think about our kindergarten leaf art?

Have you ever used the collage or frottage technique in art?

  1. Dear Mrs Hembree,

Sorry I am a bit slow of the mark today as here in Australia today its a beautiful warm sunny day.
Which with the feeling of the warmth of the sun is always nice.

I just loved all the kindergarden childrens art work as they really look amazing and really do look like real leaf men. Well done everyone.
I was wondering do you have any leaf women? 🙂

Have to make it point of reading a Lois Ehlert book as it sounds like a beautiful read.

I have used collage art work before and am always amazed with the end result.

    Thanks for sharing.
    From your friend down under,
    AA.

    • Dear AA,
Sunny warm November days sounds so strange to me! I have never lived anywhere that November would be called warm. Cold, rainy, wintery, freezing – those are the adjectives that match November here in Seattle! I envy your sun! I did throw my first snowball of the season on Sunday. A car in a parking lot had a bunch of fresh snow on the bumper and I stole a fistfull so I could throw a snowball at my husband.
      I missed.
I don’t know if some of the Leaf People where actually ladies and not all gentlemen! What I do know is that they are wonderful to look at!

Would you like me to throw a snowball for you when we get snow here again?
      From your chilly Seattle friend,
      Mrs. Hembree

  2. @ Mrs Hembree,

I just loved reading your comment it made me laugh!

Yes, I would like it if you could throw a snowball all the way from Seattle. However make sure it is a huge one as hopefully it won’t melt.

I found it strange reading also how you guys are having snow while in less than a month it will be our summer and that means BB will be on holidays which will be fun.
As I have noticed that she is finding it abit of a struggle doing certains things.

    Keep warm Mrs Hembree.
From your friend sunny side up down under,
    AA.

    • Dear Hunter,
My 6th grade class will be coming in 30 minutes or so. I will have them visit the Techie Kids page to respond to your comment. I’ve heard about your goal! I hope you make it!

  5. Dear Mrs. Hembree,

What amazing artists you have! I love how creative the children were at designing their unique leaf person. I agree, Lois Ehlert is an incredible author! We love to share her stories at our school, too. One of my favorite stories she wrote is called Snowballs. It is a very similar concept to Leaf Man. We use drawing program on the computer like TuxPaint to create our own snow people after we read the book. Maybe your students would like to try it too!

    Happy reading,
    Mrs. Moore

    • Dear Dara,
The Bulldog is our school mascot, which is why our header has bulldogs and why we call the library blog the Bulldog Reader Blog.
My favorite kind of dog is the Bernese Mountain Dog. I have one and he is very big!

      From,
      Mrs. Hembree

    • Dear Kim,

Making Leaf characters after reading Leaf Man is a fun fall activity! I would be so pleased if you included it in your Lois Ehlert Virtual Book Club!

      Have fun creating!
      Mrs. Hembree
